Join the Protest against Enviva : Forests Not Fuel!
Dear Supporters,

Do you live in Scotland? Are you in easy travelling distance of Edinburgh? If so, we need your help!

In early October, Enviva - the world's largest producer of wood pellets - will be coming to an international conference in the centre of Edinburgh. Enviva is responsible for an emerging environmental disaster in the southern US: the felling of highly biodiverse wetland forests for wood pellets which are then shipped across the Atlantic and burnt in power stations such as Drax.

Enviva wants to expand its business in the UK, so it wants to convince Scottish Government ministers and officials that cutting down forests for energy is sustainable. Will you help us mount a protest against Enviva so that it can't get away with these lies?

Protest Enviva : Forests Not Fuel!

Please join the protest against Enviva outside the Bioenergy Insight conference. Please click attending on the Facebook page and invite your friends:
Wednesday 4th October 2017, 12.30pm - 2pm

Outside the Sheraton Hotel, 1 Festival Square, Edinburgh, EH3 9SR

There will be banners, placards and more besides - but it's most important to bring yourselves. Check the Facebook page for updates nearer the time.

If you're keen, you could help us leaflet delegates going into the conference on the morning of 4th October between 8.30am - 9.30am.

If you'd like to get involved with planning the protest please email claire.robertson@biofuelwatch.org.uk - we would really love your help!

Why Enviva?

Enviva is the world's largest producer of wood pellets. Enviva sources a large proportion its wood pellets from highly biodiverse and carbon rich coastal wetland forests in the South-East of the US.

These forests are a unique and highly endangered ecosystem. They contain the highest tree diversity in North America, and they're the only home of many species such as the Venus fly trap and the Red-cockaded woodpecker. They are also home to black bears, bats, wolves, turtles, bobcats, and many more besides. Even highly endangered manatees are found in the rivers and estuaries around those wetland forests. In fact, the North American Coastal forests were recently designated a 'biodiversity hotspot', due to extremely high levels of unique and rare species.

Only 20% of original forest cover remains, most of it highly fragmented. Only 10% of the remaining forest is protected, and the demand for wood is rising rapidly: the logging rate for Southern forests was four times that of South American rainforests from 2000 to 2012.

The UK is the biggest purchaser of wood pellets from the region. The extra 2 million tonnes of exported US wood pellet production from 2012 to 2014 all went to the UK. Drax Power Station in Yorkshire is the largest buyer, burning 6.6 million tonnes of pellets last year.

At the conference, Enviva and other wood pellet companies will be trying to convince the Scottish Government that burning wood to generate electricity is sustainable, great for the climate and benefits local communities. This couldn't be further from the truth

[Biofuelwatch] MP alert re-launched - Please ask your MP to speak out against subsidies for dirty, destructive energy.

Dear Biofuelwatch supporters,

If you haven't already please email your MP. If you're unsure whether it worked last time don't worry, the system won't let you do it twice.

In September we will know more about the government's energy plans when they publish the 'Clean Growth Plan' and the Coal Phase-out white paper.

Thank you for your patience and to those who have already written.

The Biofuelwatch team

Please ask your MP to speak out against subsidies for dirty, destructive energy.

Please ask your MP to speak out against subsidies for dirty, destructive energy

Write to your MP now!
Dear Supporter,
The new government has restated its commitment to the Paris Agreement, but otherwise energy and climate change seem to have been de-prioritised.
It is evident that we need fundamental energy reform to meet (and exceed) climate change targets and ensure an urgent transition to a less energy dependent and cleaner future.
With a hung parliament, individual MPs can make a bigger difference. If enough of them demand change it can happen. So we're asking you to email your MP asking them to ensure that no more support is given to dirty and destructive energy in the UK and that real climate solutions are pursued instead!
It would be great if you could copy any correspondence you get back from your MP to biofuelwatch[at]gmail.com. If possible, please personalise your letter to your MP, eg "Congratulations on your (re) election". If you're able to visit your MP to talk to them about your concerns, that would be even better.
Thank you on behalf of Biofuelwatch, Coal Action Network, UK Without Incineration Network and London Mining Network!
